a positive from a negative - conflict resolution

The workplace can be a wonderful environment an arena where you can enjoy achievements, rising to challenges, a sense of progression and a great sense of camaraderie with colleagues. However, this last advantage can occasionally turn sour when conflict brews at work.

Any successful office is likely to be full of vibrant and varied personalities, which means that a difference of opinion, a clash of personalities, or even a major falling out, can happen from time to time.  In fact, 89 % of British workers have experienced workplace conflict that has escalated, so if you are experiencing the same thing, you are far from alone.

At the same time, according to a 2008 study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), a staggering 370 million working days were lost in Britain the preceding year due to poorly managed conflicts in the workplace. Not only does that mean that there were a lot of unhappy employees, the loss of working time cost British employers more than £24 billion.  It is clearly very important that any conflicts are resolved as swiftly and smoothly as possible.

A Target Training Associates we are adept in helping out clients deal with conflict resolution issues as part of our courses.  For example, on our Management Development Programme (MDP), we include Conflict Management and Managing Difficult People as an essential and very helpful part of our course.

We train our delegates in how to apply tried and tested techniques that will move the situation forward for both parties with minimal upset, in a wholly constructive and positive fashion. This is explored in detail on our courses, but overall the confliction resolution aspects to consider are:

  • Acknowledging differences of opinion without further aggravating the conflict
  • Being assertive when the need arises
  • Reaffirming that you are trying to work towards a common goal
  • Finding steps for positively moving forward to a position that is agreeable to both parties

We offer a wealth of tips and techniques for resolving all kind of work conflicts in a positive way and we love to share our knowledge and experience with delegates on our courses.  Our Management Development Programme teaches both this and a host of other fantastic ways to be a great leader at work and ultimately, to enjoy a more satisfying professional life.

Our next open MDP course starts in November and you can register for this ILM course now.  Alternatively we can deliver this programme in house as required and bespoke to individual organisational needs.

If you would like to find out more about how we can train you in effective conflict management, or to book any of our MDP courses, please call +44 (0)1665 605695 or email info@targettrg.co.uk
