The Mediator's Mindset: Conflict Resolution Training

London

Most workplace conflict doesn't start with a row. It starts with something small that nobody deals with, then grows in the gap while everyone hopes it will sort itself out.

The Mediator's Mindset is practical conflict resolution training for leaders and managers who would rather step in early and handle it well than clean up the damage later. You'll learn how to spot conflict before it hardens, understand what is really driving it and help people find a way back to working together.

Who This Course Is For

Most workplace conflict doesn't start with a row. It starts with something small that nobody deals with, then grows in the gap while everyone hopes it will sort itself out.

The Mediator's Mindset is for managers, team leaders and professionals who lead people and find themselves in the middle when those people fall out, whether that is an occasional disagreement or a recurring pattern that never seems to get properly resolved.

What You'll Learn on The Mediator's Mindset

Conflict is not a sign that a team is failing. Unmanaged conflict is.

Disagreement is normal in any group of people who care about their work. The problem is what happens next. Left alone, a small clash of priorities or personalities can become a silence, then a division, then a formal complaint. By the time it reaches the manager's desk, the original issue can be buried beneath weeks or months of frustration and resentment.

The Mediator's Mindset gives managers a practical way to handle conflict at every stage, from the first signs that something is wrong to the conversation that has to happen when two people can no longer work effectively together.

The course draws on approaches used by professional mediators: staying neutral, separating the person from the problem, listening for the interests underneath stated positions and helping people find a way forward they can both accept.

How the Day Works

This is a practical course, not a lecture on conflict theory. Delegates work with situations they recognise: two team members who barely speak, a colleague who takes feedback as an attack, or a meeting that repeatedly turns into a standoff. They practise the conversations, receive feedback on how they handle them and leave with a clear method they can use when the next difficult situation arises.

The day also examines the manager's own part in conflict: the habits and reactions that can make things worse without meaning to, the difference between genuinely resolving a dispute and simply ending an argument, and recognising when a situation has gone beyond what a manager should handle alone.

Key Takeaways

1. Spot it early. Recognise the signs of conflict while it is still a conversation rather than a case.

2. Get underneath it. Look beyond what each person says they want and understand the interests, concerns and needs driving their position.

3. Stay neutral under pressure. Hold the middle ground, manage your own reactions and keep both people engaged in the conversation.

4. Run the conversation. Use a clear structure for bringing people together, keeping the discussion constructive and reaching an agreement both sides can commit to.

5. Know your limits. Recognise when to handle the situation yourself, when to escalate and when HR or professional mediation needs to become involved.

Who Delivers It

Delivered by Chris Breedon, ex Royal Air Force and a professional mediator who runs his own mediation company, The Mediator's Mindset gives delegates the same practical approach he uses in real workplace disputes, adapted so managers can use it in their own difficult conversations.

It can be attended as an open course in London or delivered in-house for organisations that want their managers taking a consistent and more effective approach to workplace conflict.

"Are courses accredited?"

ILM Logo

Courses such as PTT Train the Trainer, Advanced PTT Train the Trainer, Master Trainer, Coaching Skills for Managers/Trainers, Master Coach, Presentation Skills, Management Development Programmes and Essential Skills for Managers are all accredited by the ILM. Based in the UK as part of the City & Guilds group they are a leading provider of specialist qualifications.  ILM is also recognised globally and many of their products and services are delivered and enjoyed by customers in many countries around the world.

"Do I have to complete a portfolio or pass an exam to complete the course?"

On courses that are accredited, they are performance assessed.  No portfolios or additional tests or statements are required.  Whilst on the training delegates are shown the skills and techniques required and they are then given opportunities to practise and develop.  During this time our trainers offer support and guidance accordingly. A formal assessment is then conducted at the end of the course and one to one feedback is given focusing on what was done well and areas for development.

"What is the difference between Coaching and Training?"

There are often mistakes regarding understanding the differences between the two methods.

Coaching - A conversation between the coach and the coachee whereby the coachee achieves a higher level and understanding of awareness and self-awareness, while the coach provides a safe environment and structure for that outcome to occur.

Training -  Training is teaching or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance and to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life.

To train, you need to know the skill, to coach you don’t because it is more about the person.

How can these be miss-understood? I know the English language does not help with a ski instructor and a tennis coach, but coaching and training are different. I see the cross between coach and mentor is the same; the key is to understand the boundaries between them all.
