Who This Course Is For

The managers people want to work for are often the ones who notice what is happening with the people around them and know how to respond.

Read the Room is for managers, team leaders and professionals who lead people and want to become stronger at the human side of leadership. That might be a new manager finding their feet or an experienced manager who has recognised that technical ability alone is not enough.

What You'll Learn on Read the Room

Emotional intelligence is not about being nice. It is about being accurate.

Every manager is reading the room all day, whether they realise it or not. The question is how well. Managers who read people accurately are more likely to spot disengagement before it becomes a resignation, hear what a client is not saying and recognise when to push, when to listen and when to back off.

Read the Room gives managers a practical way to get better at this.

It starts with self awareness: understanding your own triggers, your default reactions under pressure and the effect your behaviour has on the people around you. Then it turns outwards, helping you read other people more accurately, listen for what sits underneath the words and adjust how you communicate so the message lands with the person in front of you rather than the person you assumed they were.

How the Day Works

This is a practical course, not a personality test. Delegates work with situations they actually face: the conversation they have been putting off, the team member they cannot seem to reach or the meeting that repeatedly goes wrong. They explore what may be happening beneath the surface, practise responding differently and receive clear feedback on how they come across to others.

The day also deals with one of the hardest parts of emotional intelligence: staying in control of yourself when another person is becoming frustrated, angry or defensive. Delegates learn how to maintain their composure, de escalate the situation and keep a conversation productive when it would be much easier simply to react.

Key Takeaways

1. Know your own triggers. Understand what affects your reactions, how those reactions appear to other people and how to catch them before they take over the conversation.

2. Read people more accurately. Pay attention to what someone says, how they say it and what may be sitting underneath the words.

3. Adjust to the person in front of you. Adapt how you communicate so the message lands with them rather than with the version of them you had assumed.

4. Stay composed when others are not. Keep your head, de escalate tension and keep the conversation useful when emotions begin to rise.

5. Build trust deliberately. Use consistent behaviours that show people they are being listened to, understood and treated with respect.

Who Delivers It

Delivered by experienced leaders who have managed people through pressure, change and conflict, Read the Room gives delegates practical tools they can use in their very next conversation. It can be attended as an open course in London or delivered in-house for organisations that want to strengthen emotional intelligence across a wider management team.

"Are courses accredited?"

ILM Logo

Courses such as PTT Train the Trainer, Advanced PTT Train the Trainer, Master Trainer, Coaching Skills for Managers/Trainers, Master Coach, Presentation Skills, Management Development Programmes and Essential Skills for Managers are all accredited by the ILM. Based in the UK as part of the City & Guilds group they are a leading provider of specialist qualifications.  ILM is also recognised globally and many of their products and services are delivered and enjoyed by customers in many countries around the world.

"Do I have to complete a portfolio or pass an exam to complete the course?"

On courses that are accredited, they are performance assessed.  No portfolios or additional tests or statements are required.  Whilst on the training delegates are shown the skills and techniques required and they are then given opportunities to practise and develop.  During this time our trainers offer support and guidance accordingly. A formal assessment is then conducted at the end of the course and one to one feedback is given focusing on what was done well and areas for development.

"What is the difference between Coaching and Training?"

There are often mistakes regarding understanding the differences between the two methods.

Coaching - A conversation between the coach and the coachee whereby the coachee achieves a higher level and understanding of awareness and self-awareness, while the coach provides a safe environment and structure for that outcome to occur.

Training -  Training is teaching or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance and to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life.

To train, you need to know the skill, to coach you don’t because it is more about the person.

How can these be miss-understood? I know the English language does not help with a ski instructor and a tennis coach, but coaching and training are different. I see the cross between coach and mentor is the same; the key is to understand the boundaries between them all.
