The Manager's Toolkit: Essential Management Skills

London

Most people become managers because they were good at the job they were already doing. What they are rarely given are the tools for the new one: setting expectations, giving feedback, delegating properly, having difficult conversations and keeping a team moving in the same direction.

The Manager's Toolkit is practical essential management skills training for new and first-line managers. In one day, delegates build the core tools they need to manage people with greater confidence and avoid spending the next year learning everything the hard way.

Who This Course Is For

Most people become managers because they were good at the job they were already doing. What they are rarely given are the tools for the new one: setting expectations, giving feedback, delegating properly, having difficult conversations and keeping a team moving in the same direction.

The Manager's Toolkit is for new managers, team leaders and supervisors moving into their first people-management role, as well as experienced managers who have learned largely through experience and want a stronger foundation.

It is also an excellent starting point before moving into more specialised management development in areas such as delegation, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence or coaching.

What You'll Learn on The Manager's Toolkit

Good managers are made, not promoted.

Moving from doing the work to managing the people who do it is one of the biggest changes many people make in their careers, and often one of the least supported.

Suddenly, being good at your own job is no longer enough. You are expected to set direction, deal with performance, motivate different personalities, delegate work, give feedback and have conversations you may never have had before.

Too often, new managers are left to copy the best boss they ever had, avoid behaving like the worst one and work the rest out as they go.

The Manager's Toolkit gives them a better starting point.

The course focuses on the core parts of management that apply whatever the team, sector or organisation. Delegates learn how to set clear expectations so people know what good looks like, give feedback that helps change behaviour, delegate in a way that develops people rather than simply offloading work, run worthwhile one-to-ones and deal with difficult conversations before small issues become bigger ones.

How the Day Works

This is a practical course built around the situations managers actually face. Delegates work with their own teams, their own people and the conversations they may already be putting off. They practise the tools, receive feedback and leave with clear actions they can put into practice immediately.

The day also explores the mindset shift that comes with management: letting go of some of the work you were previously rewarded for doing yourself, understanding that your success is increasingly measured through the performance of other people and recognising that good management is not about controlling everything.

Sometimes the most useful thing a manager can do is create the conditions for good people to do good work, then get out of their way.

Key Takeaways

1. Set expectations people can meet. Be clear about what good looks like, what is required and how success will be judged, so nobody is left guessing.

2. Give feedback that changes something. Use a straightforward structure for reinforcing what is working and addressing what needs to change without turning the conversation into a confrontation.

3. Delegate to develop. Hand over responsibility clearly, give people the support they need and resist the temptation to take the work back the moment something wobbles.

4. Make one-to-ones worth having. Turn regular catch-ups into useful conversations about performance, priorities, development and what people need from their manager.

5. Have the difficult conversation early. Deal with problems involving performance, behaviour, attitude or attendance while they are still manageable conversations rather than formal cases.

Who Delivers It

Delivered by Ralph Moody, an experienced leader and trainer who has spent decades developing managers and teams, The Manager's Toolkit gives delegates practical tools they can use as soon as they return to work.

It can be attended as an open course in London or delivered in-house for organisations that want their new and first-line managers starting from the same strong foundation.

"Are courses accredited?"

ILM Logo

Courses such as PTT Train the Trainer, Advanced PTT Train the Trainer, Master Trainer, Coaching Skills for Managers/Trainers, Master Coach, Presentation Skills, Management Development Programmes and Essential Skills for Managers are all accredited by the ILM. Based in the UK as part of the City & Guilds group they are a leading provider of specialist qualifications.  ILM is also recognised globally and many of their products and services are delivered and enjoyed by customers in many countries around the world.

"Do I have to complete a portfolio or pass an exam to complete the course?"

On courses that are accredited, they are performance assessed.  No portfolios or additional tests or statements are required.  Whilst on the training delegates are shown the skills and techniques required and they are then given opportunities to practise and develop.  During this time our trainers offer support and guidance accordingly. A formal assessment is then conducted at the end of the course and one to one feedback is given focusing on what was done well and areas for development.

"What is the difference between Coaching and Training?"

There are often mistakes regarding understanding the differences between the two methods.

Coaching - A conversation between the coach and the coachee whereby the coachee achieves a higher level and understanding of awareness and self-awareness, while the coach provides a safe environment and structure for that outcome to occur.

Training -  Training is teaching or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance and to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life.

To train, you need to know the skill, to coach you don’t because it is more about the person.

How can these be miss-understood? I know the English language does not help with a ski instructor and a tennis coach, but coaching and training are different. I see the cross between coach and mentor is the same; the key is to understand the boundaries between them all.
