Driving Forward

Published by Ralph Moody

A North East based training company has been involved in the design and delivery of Skills for Care funded event aimed at driving Health and Social care development forward.

Working in partnership with Northumberland Care Alliance (NCA), Target Training Associates aimed the event at key managers and staff within Health and Social Care.  The sector is going through a number of key changes including the implementation of the Personalisation Agenda which was originally published by the government in 2007 as a shared vision and commitment to finding new ways to improve social care.  Target and NCA designed and delivered sessions on key areas relevant to employment engagement including:

  • Awareness of current changes taking place including ‘Personalisation Agenda’
  • Reinforcing that Leadership & Management is the number one priority
  • Focusing organisations minds on the need of an effective workforce development process including effective plans and strategy
  • Sharing of sector good practice and issues
  • Recognition of funding available to support workforce development practices

Tony Longland, Director of Target Training said “Now is a perfect opportunity for Health & Social Care organisations to take Workforce Development Planning seriously, as the sector is going through the biggest change in the way it provides services for years which means they need to review what they are offering customers and make sure their staff have the skills to deliver”

He added “Making sure your staff are able to meet the expectations of your customers, is critical to success.  Businesses need to anticipate what customers’ expectations will be and to ensure staff feel confident, motivated and able to meet that expectation.  That is the exciting challenge of Workforce Development and developing your staff motivates them accordingly. Staff are the businesses most precious resource so planning how to develop them should be a priority”

A key element of the day was networking and a number of key sector and funding organisations were able to attend including Skills for Care NE, Business Link and Northumberland Business Services Ltd (NBSL).  Joy Gair from NBSL commented “Employer engagement is crucial in diagnosing the need of the business allowing the development to focus on priority business objectives and events like this where clients can meet potential funders is an essential part of this process”.  Clients attending the event were able to speak to possible funders face to face so that they could put their development plans into practice.

The company who have worked closely with Health and Social Care management over several years were very keen to be involved as explained by Tony   “It was great to see some familiar faces from those who had been on our successful Workforce Development Programme but also great to see new individuals who are now more aware of its importance.  Furthermore, it was a chance to review and revive their plans and for the new ones, it was a chance to recognise the need, get started by action planning and investigating funding routes and innovative ideas for the future services they offer to customers”
