Published by Ralph Moody

An esteemed management award has been won by a Target Training Associates prodigy.

Joanne Hodge Manager at Norton Care Ltd, Warkworth, was presented with ‘Care Home Registered Manager Award 2010’ for demonstrating outstanding management capabilities, in particular when dealing with change.   Joanne has led her team through many changes including the significant move from residential care through to nursing care and recently dementia.  To succeed, these changes required significant management skills and Joanne has been recognised accordingly.

The award was presented recently at The Great North East Care Awards in Newcastle; part of the Great British Care Awards.  These awards are a series of regional awards which celebrates excellence in social care and pay tribute to those who work in the sector throughout England.

Joanne was nominated for the award by staff within her care home, something that she feels enormously proud of, “I felt so privileged and overwhelmed to think that staff nominated me” she said, “we all have a common goal and belief to make the life of our residents better”.  As part of the judging process she explained the ethos of what she considers her key management values and how they are passed on to their clients, “we ensure that all clients are looked after in key areas such as physical, psychological and their emotional needs and it is my responsibility to ensure these are being met”.

Joanne completed her Managers Development (MDP) and Train the Trainer Programmes with Target Training in March 2010.  The MDP was developed in partnership with Northumberland Care Alliance (NCA) and was aimed at managers in Health and Social Care, focusing on essential management skills such as motivation, delegation, time management and effective leadership.  A key spine of the programme is for managers to learn more about personalities and the impact this has in the workplace.  Speaking about the MDP programme Joanne reinforced the positive outcomes she gained from the course, “there is no doubt that I learnt a great deal on the MDP, it was a fantastic course and it set some real targets for me.   Added to that I completed a Train the Trainer with Target and that course really smashed any limiting beliefs I had and gave me the confidence to actually put things into practice” she added “They are both fantastic courses and there is no doubt that completing the MDP and Train the Trainer courses provided the springboard to make me a more effective manager ”

Tony Longland, Director at Target Training commented on how important training like this was for staff involved in Health and Social Care “We are very pleased for Joanne in winning this award, it represents so many thoughts we had when we planned the MDP originally”.   Tony also spoke of the need continued effective management training in the sector and added “Joanne is a nurse by trade and as a manager you obviously need a different set of skills, it’s a great achievement that we have managed to provide those skills for individuals in her position”.
