Held at a Glasgow city centre hotel close to the main transport hubs.
Course Location
Timings: 09:00 - 16:30
Our Professional Training Techniques (PTT) Train the Trainer courses in Glasgow are held at a fantastic city centre hotel with easy access to the main transport hubs. Your venue address is confirmed in your joining instructions. We also run this course in Edinburgh if that's easier for you.
Who This Course Is For
Most people who come on this course never set out to be a trainer.
You might be the person who knows the job best, so you've been asked to show everyone else. You might be a manager who has inherited the induction. You might already deliver training and want to stop winging it.
Wherever you're starting from, you don't need any previous training experience to join us. You just need to want to do it well. Two days later you'll have the skills to stand up and train properly, and delegates consistently tell us it's the best course they've been on.
What You'll Learn on Our Glasgow Train the Trainer Course
Have you ever sat in a training session where the trainer read the slides and never really engaged you? How much did you take away from it?
Not much, probably. That isn't your fault. Reading PowerPoint slides isn't training.
We're here to change that. Our Professional Training Techniques (PTT) Train the Trainer course teaches real training skills, not slide management. With guidance from our Master Trainers, you'll leave with the knowledge, the techniques and the confidence to train brilliantly.
We cap every course at six delegates. That's a deliberate choice. It means you get properly coached rather than sitting at the back of a room of twelve.
What's Included
- Two days with one of our Master Trainers, in a group of no more than six people
- A full set of study guides and handouts to take away
- Your own training reflective journal, to keep developing after the course
- One to one feedback on your assessed session
- ILM certification and a digital credential on successful completion
- A year's membership of our Train the Trainer Academy
- Lunch and refreshments on both days
The Five Pillars of Instruction
You'll be taught and assessed against our tried and tested five pillars:
1. Structure. Learn how to plan and run a training session that flows, and that your participants can follow.
2. Question Technique. Learn how to ask the right questions to engage your audience and get them thinking.
3. Personal Qualities. Understand learners' behaviour, build rapport and use body language effectively.
4. Aids. Get hands on with the training aids that work today, and learn how to use them properly. That includes why we shouldn't misuse PowerPoint.
5. Content. Make sure your content is relevant and matches your structure.
Day One Highlights
Fundamentals. You can't run before you can walk, so we start with the principles and techniques that everything else is built on.
Behavioural Personality Type. You'll use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to understand your own behavioural type, and how to use it to your advantage as a trainer.
'Throw the Monkey' Techniques. One of the best engagement techniques there is, and it works wherever and whenever you're training.
Questioning. We go deeper into the different questioning techniques and when each one earns its place.
Structure. The key elements of a training session that motivates people and checks their understanding.
Consolidation. Plenty of chances to put the day into practice before you go home.
Day Two Highlights
Coping with Nerves. It's completely normal to feel nervous in front of a group. We'll help you build the habits that settle them.
Use of Visual Aids. PowerPoint can make or break a session. We'll tackle the poor use of it, and cover how to get the best from a whiteboard and flipchart too.
Managing Participant Behaviour. Difficult behaviour can derail a session. We'll show you how to handle the ones you're most likely to meet.
Evaluating Training. Learn how to evaluate your own training so you know it's working.
Assessed Session. You'll bring the two days together and deliver a training session of your own.
Assessment and Your ILM Certification
On day two you'll deliver a training session and be assessed against ILM criteria. With only six people in the room, you'll get proper one to one feedback focused on what you did well and what to work on next.
The assessment is nothing to worry about. Our job is to stretch you, not to catch you out, and you'll have had two full days of practice and support before you get there.
Sessions are graded C (Pass), B2 (Competent Trainer) or B1 (Highly Competent Trainer). On successful completion you receive your ILM certificate and a digital credential you can add to your LinkedIn profile and your CV.
Here's what sets this course apart. You won't be assessed on a portfolio, an assignment or a written exam. You'll be assessed on standing up and training a group, in front of a Master Trainer, with one to one feedback straight afterwards. It's a far better test of whether someone can actually train, which is why employers rate it.
If you're comparing train the trainer qualifications, that's the difference worth weighing up.
Train the Trainer Academy Membership
You'll also get an annual pass to our Train the Trainer Academy, with online tutorials covering Trainer Essentials, Understanding Behaviour, Effective Engagement, Structure, Confidence, Questioning Skills, Difficult People, Visual Aids, Lecture and Webinar delivery, Remote Training and Coaching and Mentoring Skills.
Membership also includes regular live coaching calls with one of our Master Trainers.
It's a brilliant complement to the course itself, and it means the learning doesn't stop when you walk out of the room.

★★★★★ "Our group all got on superbly well! Ralph's approach was personable, patient and engaging. Nothing was too much trouble for him. As well as group feedback, we had the opportunity for one to one feedback too which was hugely beneficial. Although I had some experience of facilitating training, I learnt skills that I will carry with me for the rest of my career." Caroline Day, One Medical Group
★★★★★ "After the course had ended, I delivered a training session which received excellent feedback, something I attribute to the new skills I learned on the PTT course. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this course to colleagues and when I need further training, Target Training will be my first port of call. "Are courses accredited?"

Courses such as PTT Train the Trainer, Advanced PTT Train the Trainer, Master Trainer, Coaching Skills for Managers/Trainers, Master Coach, Presentation Skills, Management Development Programmes and Essential Skills for Managers are all accredited by the ILM. Based in the UK as part of the City & Guilds group they are a leading provider of specialist qualifications. ILM is also recognised globally and many of their products and services are delivered and enjoyed by customers in many countries around the world.
"Do I have to complete a portfolio or pass an exam to complete the course?"
On courses that are accredited, they are performance assessed. No portfolios or additional tests or statements are required. Whilst on the training delegates are shown the skills and techniques required and they are then given opportunities to practise and develop. During this time our trainers offer support and guidance accordingly. A formal assessment is then conducted at the end of the course and one to one feedback is given focusing on what was done well and areas for development.
"What is the difference between Coaching and Training?"
There are often mistakes regarding understanding the differences between the two methods.
Coaching - A conversation between the coach and the coachee whereby the coachee achieves a higher level and understanding of awareness and self-awareness, while the coach provides a safe environment and structure for that outcome to occur.
Training - Training is teaching or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance and to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life.
To train, you need to know the skill, to coach you don’t because it is more about the person.
How can these be miss-understood? I know the English language does not help with a ski instructor and a tennis coach, but coaching and training are different. I see the cross between coach and mentor is the same; the key is to understand the boundaries between them all.
"Are trainers experienced?"
Our trainers have a vast experience in coaching, training and management and you can see their individual profiles here. We pride ourselves on delivering the best possible training to our clients and we guarantee it will fit your training need requirements.
"What about delivery in-house?”
