Own Your Day: Time Management Training

London

Most managers don't have a time problem. They have an everyone-else's-priorities problem. The diary fills with other people's meetings, questions and urgencies, while the work that actually matters gets pushed to the end of the day, or doesn't get done at all.

Own Your Day is practical time management training built for that reality. You'll learn how to decide what genuinely deserves your time, protect it, deal with the things that steal it and get the important work done without simply working longer.

Who This Course Is For

Most managers don't have a time problem. They have an everyone-else's-priorities problem. The diary fills with other people's meetings, questions and urgencies, while the work that actually matters gets pushed to the end of the day, or doesn't get done at all.

Own Your Day is for managers, team leaders and professionals who feel busy all day but still finish it wondering where the time went. The aim is not to make people work faster. It is to help them take control of where their time goes and make more deliberate choices about what gets their attention.

What You'll Learn on Own Your Day

Being busy is not the same as being productive.

Time management is not about squeezing more into the day. It is about doing the right things at the right time, protecting the time they need and being confident enough to challenge the things that get in the way.

Most people were never taught how to do that. They inherited a diary, a to-do list and an inbox and worked out the rest by surviving it. Own Your Day gives managers a more deliberate way to work: a practical method for separating what genuinely matters from what simply shouts the loudest, planning time that holds up under pressure and dealing with the interruptions, requests and last-minute changes that come with managing people.

This is a practical time management course, not a theory session. Delegates work on their own diary, their own priorities and their own recurring time drains. They learn how to prioritise without guilt, protect focused time, run shorter and more purposeful meetings and say "no", "not yet" or "someone else" without damaging relationships.

Find Your Time Thieves

A key part of the day is a hard look at what actually steals your time. Delegates map their own time thieves: meetings that don't need them, interruptions that could wait, tasks that landed on their desk and never left. They test each one against three simple questions: Does this need doing at all? Does it need doing by me? Does it need doing now?

Then they do something about it. Some things get stopped. Some get delegated. Some get given a specific place in the diary instead of being allowed to interrupt whenever they choose. Because delegates work with their own real examples rather than made-up scenarios, the improvements can start the moment they return to work.

Key Takeaways

1. Decide what deserves your time. Test every task, meeting and request: does it need doing at all, does it need doing by you, and does it need doing now?

2. Find your time thieves and deal with them. Map where your week actually goes, then drop, delegate or contain the things stealing it.

3. Prioritise without the guilt. Stop firefighting other people's urgencies and start working to your own priorities, with a clear way of explaining why.

4. Protect your focused time. Block it, defend it, and cut meetings and interruptions down to the ones that genuinely earn their place.

5. Say no, not yet, or not me. Push back, hand off and delegate without damaging relationships, so the work still gets done by the right person.

Who Delivers It

Delivered by experienced leaders who have managed teams, projects and businesses under real time pressure, Own Your Day gives delegates practical tools they can use the very next morning. It can be attended as an open course in London or delivered in-house for teams who need to take control of their time together.

"Are courses accredited?"

ILM Logo

Courses such as PTT Train the Trainer, Advanced PTT Train the Trainer, Master Trainer, Coaching Skills for Managers/Trainers, Master Coach, Presentation Skills, Management Development Programmes and Essential Skills for Managers are all accredited by the ILM. Based in the UK as part of the City & Guilds group they are a leading provider of specialist qualifications.  ILM is also recognised globally and many of their products and services are delivered and enjoyed by customers in many countries around the world.

"Do I have to complete a portfolio or pass an exam to complete the course?"

On courses that are accredited, they are performance assessed.  No portfolios or additional tests or statements are required.  Whilst on the training delegates are shown the skills and techniques required and they are then given opportunities to practise and develop.  During this time our trainers offer support and guidance accordingly. A formal assessment is then conducted at the end of the course and one to one feedback is given focusing on what was done well and areas for development.

"What is the difference between Coaching and Training?"

There are often mistakes regarding understanding the differences between the two methods.

Coaching - A conversation between the coach and the coachee whereby the coachee achieves a higher level and understanding of awareness and self-awareness, while the coach provides a safe environment and structure for that outcome to occur.

Training -  Training is teaching or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance and to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life.

To train, you need to know the skill, to coach you don’t because it is more about the person.

How can these be miss-understood? I know the English language does not help with a ski instructor and a tennis coach, but coaching and training are different. I see the cross between coach and mentor is the same; the key is to understand the boundaries between them all.
