Are you a leader or manager faced with the task of negotiating and resolving conflict?

In today's diverse work environment, leaders and managers must be able to effectively negotiate and resolve conflict. This type of training is crucial, because it provides participants with the necessary abilities to detect, understand, and resolve disputes within their organisation.

Conflict is an inevitable aspect of any workplace, and how it is managed can have profound implications on productivity, employee satisfaction, and the overall health of the organisation. Understanding the fundamental causes of conflict, as well as the psychology behind stress and threat behaviours, allows leaders to handle situations before they escalate.

This training offers a deep dive into the principles and practices of mediation, a method that encourages open communication and collaborative problem-solving, decreasing the need for more combative and costly forms of dispute resolution.

Key takeaways:

1. Understand the Genesis of Conflict: Gain insights into the root causes of conflicts in the workplace, with a focus on the SCARF model—Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and Fairness—and how these drivers can impact interactions.

2. Reflect on Personal Conflict Resolution Styles: Through self-reflection and group discussions, identify personal approaches to conflict resolution and compare them to established conflict handling types.

3. Mediation Versus Other Resolution Techniques: Learn the nuances that differentiate mediation from litigation, arbitration, and negotiation, and why it can be the preferred method of resolution.

4. Assess the Impact of Conflict: Evaluate the tangible and intangible costs of conflict on your organisation using the latest research, including time and financial resources spent on conflict management.

5. Comprehensive Understanding of Mediation: Delve into the mediation process, understand its stages, who should mediate, and the benefits it brings in terms of cost and time savings compared to other dispute resolution methods.

Participants will emerge with a heightened awareness of their own conflict resolution styles and how these styles impact their leadership and the wider organisational culture.

They will learn to apply the SCARF model to better understand team dynamics and how to manage them effectively. By comparing mediation to other resolution methods, leaders will be able to choose the most constructive approach to conflict resolution in a given situation.

Furthermore, understanding the costs associated with unresolved conflict—not just in financial terms but also considering employee morale and time management—will empower leaders to make informed decisions about conflict management strategies.

Ultimately, this training is not just about resolving disputes; it's about transforming the organisational approach to conflict, leading to a more harmonious, efficient, and resilient workplace.

"Are courses accredited?"

ILM Logo

Courses such as PTT Train the Trainer, Advanced PTT Train the Trainer, Master Trainer, Coaching Skills for Managers/Trainers, Master Coach, Presentation Skills, Management Development Programmes and Essential Skills for Managers are all accredited by the ILM. Based in the UK as part of the City & Guilds group they are a leading provider of specialist qualifications.  ILM is also recognised globally and many of their products and services are delivered and enjoyed by customers in many countries around the world.

"Do I have to complete a portfolio or pass an exam to complete the course?"

On courses that are accredited, they are performance assessed.  No portfolios or additional tests or statements are required.  Whilst on the training delegates are shown the skills and techniques required and they are then given opportunities to practise and develop.  During this time our trainers offer support and guidance accordingly. A formal assessment is then conducted at the end of the course and one to one feedback is given focusing on what was done well and areas for development.

"What is the difference between Coaching and Training?"

There are often mistakes regarding understanding the differences between the two methods.

Coaching - A conversation between the coach and the coachee whereby the coachee achieves a higher level and understanding of awareness and self-awareness, while the coach provides a safe environment and structure for that outcome to occur.

Training -  Training is teaching or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance and to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life.

To train, you need to know the skill, to coach you don’t because it is more about the person.

How can these be miss-understood? I know the English language does not help with a ski instructor and a tennis coach, but coaching and training are different. I see the cross between coach and mentor is the same; the key is to understand the boundaries between them all.
