course agenda:

Day 1 - This day is about giving delegates the key elements that make highly effective trainers and covers:

The principles of training. In this session, we review the approaches to learning and development and how these are implemented in the workplace.

Describe behavioural personality using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) in a training context. Delegates get to identify their own behavioural personality.

Skills needed by trainers. We identify the skills needed by highly effective trainers to train others using the OPEN UP methodology.

We provide an overview of an effective training structure. Key elements are explained such as aim, objectives and learning outcomes that will aid delegates to create a correct training framework.

Engagement techniques. We explain and demonstrate the ‘Throw the Monkey’ technique which engages delegates and provides trainers with opportunities to reflect and think in the dynamic environment.

Describe effective questioning skills and answering techniques. Vital for effective training delivery; in this session, techniques are taught and practised to a high standard. This includes the use of open, pose, pause & pounce techniques and rhetorical questioning. Furthermore, advanced 4-part reasoning techniques are explained, demonstrated and practised.

Practise delivery using skills and techniques taught. A key element of this course is giving delegates the opportunity to practise what has been taught.  This will improve confidence and reinforce the need for effective training skills.

Day 2- This day is about reinforcing what we learnt on day 1 and putting into practice the skills taught. By the end of the session, delegate training skills will have improved significantly:

What was learnt yesterday? We consolidate the key skills learnt yesterday as a group activity using lesson delivery skills.

Dealing with nerves. This session looks at understanding why we get nervous and how to deal with nerves effectively including what is going on in our brains and how to create positive habits. Confidence and awareness will improve.

Use of visual aids. PowerPoint can be your best friend or your worst enemy. In this session, we explore what poor use of PowerPoint is like and offer some key tips to ensure it is used effectively. The use of the flipchart and whiteboard is also discussed with some key tips for using correctly.

Managing behaviour. Poor delegate behaviour can cause massive problems and this session is all about how to manage typical negative behaviours in a training session. Skills and techniques are demonstrated and discussed.

Evaluating training. We explain how to evaluate training to ensure it is working. Reference is made to the Kirkpatrick model of evaluation to ensure training is evaluated during and after the training process.

Assessed Sessions. Delegates are assessed delivering a training session against the agreed ILM standards. Upon successful completion individuals are awarded either B2 - Competent Trainer or B1 - Highly Competent trainer award as well as ILM Certification.

testimonials from clients who have completed this course:

★★★★★ "Our group was a full course and we all got on superbly well! Ralph’s approach was personable, patient and engaging. Nothing was too much trouble for him. As well as group feedback, we had the opportunity for one to one feedback too which was hugely beneficial. Although I had someexperience of facilitating training, I learnt skills that I will carry with me for the rest of my career." Caroline Day, One Medical Group.

★★★★★ "After the course had ended, I delivered a training session which received excellentfeedback – something I attribute to the new skills I learned on the PTT course. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this course to colleagues and when I need further training, Target Training will be my first port of call. it was definitely the best training course I’ve ever been on!" Ruth Hawke, SYHA.

★★★★★ "Last week’s course was by far the best I have ever been on. I suppose before the start I had a feeling it was going to be like the PTTLS course we did, oh how I was wrong. I am so looking forward to putting into place the powerful skills you have taught me and for that I would like to thank you so very much." David Frodsham, Greenergy

"Are courses accredited?"

ILM Logo

Courses such as PTT Train the Trainer, Advanced PTT Train the Trainer, Master Trainer, Coaching Skills for Managers/Trainers, Master Coach, Presentation Skills, Management Development Programmes and Essential Skills for Managers are all accredited by the ILM. Based in the UK as part of the City & Guilds group they are a leading provider of specialist qualifications.  ILM is also recognised globally and many of their products and services are delivered and enjoyed by customers in many countries around the world.

"Do I have to complete a portfolio or pass an exam to complete the course?"

On courses that are accredited, they are performance assessed.  No portfolios or additional tests or statements are required.  Whilst on the training delegates are shown the skills and techniques required and they are then given opportunities to practise and develop.  During this time our trainers offer support and guidance accordingly. A formal assessment is then conducted at the end of the course and one to one feedback is given focusing on what was done well and areas for development.

"What is the difference between Coaching and Training?"

There are often mistakes regarding understanding the differences between the two methods.

Coaching - A conversation between the coach and the coachee whereby the coachee achieves a higher level and understanding of awareness and self-awareness, while the coach provides a safe environment and structure for that outcome to occur.

Training -  Training is teaching or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance and to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life.

To train, you need to know the skill, to coach you don’t because it is more about the person.

How can these be miss-understood? I know the English language does not help with a ski instructor and a tennis coach, but coaching and training are different. I see the cross between coach and mentor is the same; the key is to understand the boundaries between them all.
